Rei, as it is used in Reiki, is interpreted to mean higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness. Ki is life energy. As long as something is alive, it has life energy circulating through it and surrounding it. Ki is responsive to positive or negative thoughts and feelings. When we accept negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves, they attach themselves to the energy field and disrupt the flow of Ki. This may diminish the vital function of specific organs and cells of the body unless the blockage is released.
To receive Reiki, people may sit or lie in comfortable clothing. The practitioner begins at the head working all the way down to the feet and back. Hands are placed about 4 inches above the client resting at 7 energy centers along the spine. Each of these centers represents a kind of cross-roads of energy lines where stress and toxins that have been stored in the body can be addressed and released.
Studies of Reiki show significant reduction of pain, discomfort, and an increased sense of well-being. At Portsmouth Regional Hospital NH, surgical patients decreased their use of pain medications, stayed for shorter periods, and reported increased satisfaction with pre and post surgical Reiki sessions.
